Govind Patel is an ordinary guy with whom anybody can relate. He is very ambitious.

His main ambition is to become a businessman as he thinks that, being a Gujarati , business is in his blood. His best friends are Omi and Ish Ishaan. Govind is doubtful or noncommittal about things. His father abandoned him when he was 11 and his mother runs a small business to make ends meet.

Since he is 15,Govind has taken a keen interest in business.

He makes extra income by tutoring maths. He continues these sessions even after starting the cricket shop. He is the narrator of this story and the one who makes the title's "Three Mistakes". During the course of the story he falls in love with Vidya, Ishan's younger sister for whom he is a private tutor. Govind looks after the financial part of the business as he has good business sense and mathematical skills.

He is often shallow and thinks logically instead of allowing his emotions to dictate his behavior. Ishaan Ish is a big cricket freak and a patriot.

Ishaan was the best cricketer in his locality and school. He suggests the name of their business as "Team India Cricket Shop".

He helps Govind's business by organizing daily cricket coaching camps. He has a younger sister, Vidya, about whom he is quite protective. When he discovers that a boy named Ali is a very talented batsman, he decides to go any length to give Ali proper training.

Ishaan usually looks after day-to-day shop activities as he has genuine interest in anything cricket-related. Ishan is witty and talkative.

He is more emotional than logical. He takes decisions by his emotions.

Due to this he is in stark contrast to Govind. Ish trusts Govind for most of the novel until he learns about his affair with Vidya after which he stops talking to him. Omi is the son of the Hindu priest of the local temple.

His family enjoys great respect among the people. Through Omi's parents and maternal uncle who owns a few shops as a part of the temple trust property , they readily get a place to start their business. The story recounts the life of three youths, Omi, Ishaan and Govind trying to make a life staying in small-town Gujarat.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life

Given Govind's business acumen and Ishaan's love for cricket, the youngsters decide to open a shop that sells cricket goods. Omi's family helps them to get a rented place outside a temple, and soon enough the place is a hit with the locals. Chetan's biggest strength as a writer is his ability to create interesting settings and situations. Moving on, Ishan takes a great liking to one of the local Muslim boys, Ali with a magical ability to smash the ball for a six each time.

Living with the regret of making it himself, Ishan decides to train the year old.

Strangely, the lad himself is least interested in cricket but Ishan and his friends take it upon themselves to not only train him for free, but even endure great pains to take him all the way to Sydney at the suggestion of one of the Australian players.

There, Ali is offered a contract on the condition that he become an Australian national only to have the year-old spout dramatic lines such as, 'Does that mean I cannot play for India?! Then I don't want it!

Though this is true when we think of countries like Russia or Germany or China, where the medium of instruction is not English, we cannot escape English in India, be it for Technical Education or for any other modern formal professional education.

One finds it difficult to relate to the incidents as they occur throughout the book, especially the entire saga of happenings that takes the three friends and the twelve-year old 'gifted' cricketer Ali to Australia. Suddenly, English was in the limelight. Heard a lot about this book and it was also a part of the curriculum for the students of higher secondary school.
